Equine Supplement with a blend of key pivotal nutrients to support a balanced reaction to stress in the horse.

U-Balance Stress Pellet is for horses on a balanced diet that don’t respond well in with stressful situations.  Recommended minimum trial period is 2 to 4 weeks

So many things can elicit a stress reaction in the horse.  These include travel, exercise, change in environment, loss of companions, performance, even weather, just to name a few.  These events may cause release of hormones that have wide reaching effects throughout the body, from mood to metabolism to the immune response.  A targeted supplement can assist the body in maintaining balanced and stable reactions.

Stress is a normal part of life, and the body's reactions to it are designed to assist the horse in getting past challenging situations.  This is good to a point, but when stressful events continue or the horse's natural temperament interprets minor things in a stressful way, the result can be a disruption in homeostasis which can lead to changes in mood and even inefficient energy metabolism.  The right ingredients can be formulated to help the horse maintain balance.

  • Taurine is a Nitrogen and Sulfur containing organic acid very similar in structure to amino acids.  Taurine exerts its effects by interacting with GABA receptors in the brain in an area of the thalamus, which coordinates communication between the primitive, emotional brain and the thinking brain.  A Taurine supplement also has antioxidant properties that may also be of benefit.
  • Research has found that reaction to stress is associated with increased production of Nitric Oxide in the brain, which leads to oxygen free radical formation.  Experimentally blocking this Nitric Oxide production contributes to control of exaggerated emotional reactions.  This means there is a role for antioxidants in maintaining balance.  Citrus Bioflavanoids and Vitamin C are good choices. These are water soluble antioxidants with activity both within the neurons and in the fluid surrounding them.
  • Antioxidants also help with the metabolic issues that can occur when horses are stressed.  Under stress, muscle is more likely to rely on anaerobic metabolism, which is the quickest way to generate energy, but is inefficient and produces a lot of oxidative stress.  Supplemental antioxidants can help protect against the cellular damage this causes.
  • The amino acid Glycine plays interesting functions in the nervous system.  In the spinal cord and the primitive brain areas, it promotes balance of the neurotransmitters that maintain calm. In higher brain areas the role is reversed and it supports attention, focus and organized thought.
  • Inositol has many functions, but the one of interest here is as a second messenger in the nervous system. When important neurotransmitters like serotonin attach to a cell membrane, Inositol, as a second messenger compound, transmits this information to structures within the cell, including the nucleus.  Supplemental Inositol can support efficient communication in the nervous system of the horse.
  • Gamma Oryzanol is a polyphenolic found primarily in rice bran oil. Although formal research and details on how it may help are sparse, its use as an agent to support calm as a first application was proposed by Japanese researchers. Gamma Oryzanol is also an anabolic muscle building compound, especially in geldings, and could contribute to well being in this way.
